KEY FEATURES OF ACT:
The ACT exam consists of four main sections, with an optional writing (essay) test:
1. English (45 minutes, 75 questions):
Tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. Focuses on your ability to identify errors and improve the structure of sentences and passages.
2. Math (60 minutes, 60 questions):
Covers a wide range of math topics, including pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. A calculator is allowed, and the questions are designed to measure problemsolving and mathematical reasoning skills.
3. Reading (35 minutes, 40 questions):
Tests reading comprehension by asking questions about passages from a variety of subjects, including fiction, social science, humanities, and natural science. Focuses on identifying main ideas, understanding the author’s tone, and making inferences.
4. Science (35 minutes, 40 questions):
Tests your ability to interpret, analyze, and evaluate scientific information presented in graphs, charts, and experiments. Focuses more on reasoning and interpretation rather than specific scientific knowledge.
5. Optional Writing (40 minutes):
Students are given a prompt and must write an argumentative essay that analyzes different perspectives on an issue. Although optional, some colleges may require it, so it’s important to check the requirements of the schools you’re applying to.
